So, instead of burying your head in the sand in true ostrich fashion, let’s work towards stopping a leaky shower faucet. And that too without falling prey to the guiles of abstruse thinking plumbing professionals.

Time, Tools And Tenacity

A few simple tools, 30 minutes of your time and a hard-torpedo attitude and the specters of the leaky faucet will be lifted forever. You may feel that conventional generalizations may not hold much water, but in most cases, the villain of the piece is a washer that’s on its last legs, desperately trying to keep afloat.

Here’s what you can do to save yourself the horrendous costs of hiring a professional:

Shut off the water supply to the bathroom. Unscrew the valve cover using the flat edge of a screwdriver. Be careful not to bend or cause any kind of serious damage to the cover.

Now turn your attention to the screw that keeps the diverter attached to the wall. Use a shower stem socket to do the needful if there’s no screw in sight.

Now that the diverter is off, separate the stem from the diverter. Check the condition of the threads on the stem. A run down state calls for a replacement, without any delay.

With the stem out of the way, it’s time to check the washer. A potent combination of white vinegar, water and a toothbrush will sound the death knell for the ominous mineral deposits on the assembly.

Check the washer’s condition. In most cases, a replacement may be required. Insert the new part, coated with a little Vaseline to ensure that it is seated correctly. Tighten the screw that holds the washer.

Place the valve stem back in the assembly and fasten it into the wall. Replace the valve cover, and use a modicum of plumber’s putty around the edges to make an impermeable seal.

Now, without any further delay, turn on the water supply and check for leaks. Thankfully, the leak is now a thing of the past, and uninterrupted sleep at night is what the future has in store for you.

How to Replace Moen Shower Faucet
By Yoga Priyakara

Shower faucets from Moen have always endeavored to give homeowners complete satisfaction. From the state-of-the-art one piece design that ensures remarkably quick and trouble-free installation to very advanced cartridges that come minus the daunting presence of washers or springs, these fixtures have managed to liberate homeowners from the constraints of complicated installation and replacement procedures.

But still, the thought of how to replace Moen shower faucet that’s as old as your house can make any homeowner innately skeptical. But before you decide to seek salvation from the yellow pages, try out the following procedure. It’s sure to prevent a drain on your bank account, if not anything else.

Set Sail Into Uncharted Waters

So without any further ado, jettison that intransigence about performing this arduous task yourself, and get down to some serious business. Here’s how:

Start off by turning off the main water valve of the house.

Open the faucet, and keep it in that state for a while to prevent the water in the lines or that getting past the valve from making inroads into the wall.

Remove the handle, the plastic cover and the screw, and in that order only.

The screws that keep the chrome plate firmly in its place are next to go. However, there are some faucets that can be repaired without this step.

Using needle nose pliers remove the pin holding up the cartridge. Sometimes, it might be a little intractable to deal with, which can be attributed to the presence of hard water. In such an eventuality, pass the baton on to a plumbing professional.

It’s time to ascertain the extent of the damage to the cartridge. If it’s in a deplorable condition, don’t bother to repair it. Just replace it with a new one, something Moen will do willingly without any charges.

Before the new cartridge makes its way into the precincts of the faucet, make sure the walls of the faucet are cleaned thoroughly and coated with plumbing grease. Ditto for the new part.

Insert the cartridge in perfect position. Now, replace the pin, sleeve and chrome plate.

All Fervent Prayers Answered

In all probability, you’re sure to experience a surge of undiluted pride the moment you turn the water back on. Congratulations! It’s now time to replace the handle and bask in the glory of your accomplishment.

A Guide To Make Home Repairs "plumb" Easy

Whether you live in a modest cottage or a sprawling estate, if you are a homeowner, chances are at some point you will be faced with a home repair job.

Often, homeowners will try to do the job themselves, whether it’s painting, landscaping or plumbing, in an effort to save money.

Unfortunately, people can sometimes get in over their heads when they try to tackle a job for which they lack the necessary skills or information.

The good news for homeowners who like to do it themselves is that help is on the way in the form of a new book. Plumbing 101 is said to give complete directions for overcoming 25 of the most common plumbing problems facing homeowners.

Aimed at homeowners with little or no do-it-yourself experience, Black & Decker Plumbing 101 (Creative Publishing international/July 2006/$18.95 paperback) assumes no previous knowledge and claims to eliminate guesswork and confusion.

Experts say homeowners who know what they are doing may be able to save a significant amount of money by making their own basic plumbing repairs.

Plumbing 101 was created so homeowners could remedy the most common plumbing problems themselves.

Some of the projects included are thawing frozen pipes, fixing a burst pipe, retrieving an item from the sink drain, stopping toilet runs and adjusting or replacing tank components, replacing a kitchen sink faucet, plus much more.

Readers will learn how to:

• Recover items from drain traps

• Fix leaky faucets

• Stop running toilets

• Unclog every drain in the house

• Add a shower to the bathtub

• Update bathroom and kitchen faucets

• Replace a toilet

• and much more.

Plumbing 101 is written by Dave Griffin, a professional handyman, landscaper and writer. Other books in the series include Wiring 101, Flooring 101 and Home Improvement 101.

If you think only tennis and football can be fixed, you better think again. Guess what, it’s just as easy to fix leaking shower faucet.

So if scouting for solutions to put a definite end to the interminable battle with those ominous leaks and drips has become more of a tiresome joke, here are tips at their formula best that ensure the blueprint for success. They are ideal for those languishing in an ephemeral world of bright ideas.

A Vexed Subject, No More

Here are tips that neither require a nuanced understanding of plumbing techniques, nor the need of high-end tools. Just a pipe wrench and assortment of ‘O’ rings, and you’re sure to experience an epiphanic episode. Let’s start with:

Cutting off the water supply completely, either in the bathroom or in the main cut-off valve in the basement.

Let the water in the leaky faucet drain completely.

It’s now time to take off the faucet handle screw. This is achieved by turning the screw clockwise, with a modicum of help from a screwdriver or knife.

Remove the faucet handle, making use of a handle hammer in case it’s stuck at the head with the stem of the faucet.

You’ve finally managed to reach the root of the problem- the rubber gasket. The moment this part leaves dregs on your hands, you know its innings has come to an end.

Replace the worn out part, but make sure the new ring is placed correctly inside the shower head. A slight deviation from the norm could undo all your efforts.

Lime deposits around the handle should not be allowed to settle comfortably either.

Replace all the parts that have been removed.

I know you are delirious with anticipation and dying to know if your efforts have actually paid off. Just turn on the water and the self-evident truth is there for all to see.

The secret to fixing leaky shower faucets easy and fast ! See http://www.SpicyKitchens.com

For the uninitiated, a leaking shower faucet translates into replacement of the defective part. Seems like the phrase shower faucet fix has failed to make inroads into their lexicon?

Never mind those cavalier attempts at repairing a compression or cartridge faucet in the kitchen sink, here’s a pronouncement that’s sure to be greeted with a lot of cheer. A faulty faucet in the shower can be fixed using the same mechanism.

With a socket wrench, one hour of your precious time and an investment worth less than $50, you are on your way to putting an end to the sordid drip-drip saga.

Seven Steps To Success

Here’s what you always wanted to know, but didn’t know whom to ask:

Start by cutting off the water supply to the shower. With a help of a small pocket knife, remove the shower handle cap and reveal more than a glimpse of the screw inside.

With a screwdriver, loosen and remove the screw. Take off the handle and preserve safely.

Using another small screwdriver, lift the U-shaped cartridge retaining clip. Remove the nut that locks the cartridge into the valve body.

Take off the cartridge with some assistance from pliers.

Open the water line for some time. This exercise is meant to flush out all the dirt and debris that clog the passages in the body of the valve.

Using an old, soft toothbrush, take off all visible traces of dirt and grime. Check for any worn out ‘O’ rings at the base of the stem. Replace with new ones.

Reinstall all the parts in reverse order.

Now, A Trial Run

On completion of the repair process, it’s now time to assess the degree of success. Open the water line, and voila, your efforts have borne fruit. What if the leak is back? Well, don’t let it dampen your spirits just yet. A cartridge repair kit is sure to fix it permanently.

Do you know just how you can fix that leaky shower faucet – easy and fast ? Check out http://www.SpicyKitchens.com

Where You Can Find Delta Faucet Parts For Your Delta Faucet
By Phil F. Hambly

When you purchased your new delta faucet, you probably were not considering the possibility that you would need your paperwork a few years down the road to order parts. When you have lost your paperwork for the faucet, don’t worry, there are some places that you can look to be sure that you are ordering the correct delta faucet parts that you will need for your faucet.

When you know where to look and that you will have the correct parts to fix your faucet, you are sure to feel better, and know that your faucet will be in working condition again soon.

The first place that you can look for the correct delta faucet parts is the delta faucet website. If you go to your favorite search engine and just type in the phrase that you are looking for, you are sure to find the correct website that will let you know what parts you are needing for your faucet. One thing you may want to keep in mind is the number or model of the delta faucet that you need parts for. This will ensure that you are purchasing the correct parts that will fit your faucet.

Another place that you can look for delta faucet parts is your local home improvement center. If they sell delta faucets themselves, then you are sure to find the necessary parts that you will need to fix your faucet. The only problem that you may have is that the faucet might be too old for them to still carry the parts. But, you should check and see anyways before you come to that conclusion.

The last place that you could look around for delta faucet parts would be a plumbing store. Because a plumbing store specializes in all things for your home and water needs, they just might have the part that you are needing for your faucet. If they do not happen to carry the part in the store, you should ask them about ordering it for you.

As you can see, there are many places available that you can look for the delta faucet parts that you need. If you can, try to take the old part with you so that you can be sure that you are getting the correct part to replace the old one.

Phil has been working as a repairman for more than 7 years. He has plenty of experience in repairing homes, especially in bathrooms since that is where he started his career. He is focused on water conservation, since the bathroom is the number one place of water consumption in the home. Visit http://www.3falk.com to learn more about conserving water and shower faucets.

The Faucet Handle is Hard to Turn – Repairing a Single Handle Faucet
By Tom Dennis

It often happens to me as a plumber. After I repair a faucet and the homeowner turns the faucet lever for the first time they are amazed.

"The faucet turns so easily!" they exclaim. What is amazing to them is not that the faucet works so easily after repairing, but that they had never noticed that it was not working well until it either leaked terribly, or was impossible to move the handle.

Think about it. You walk into the kitchen or bathroom and, as you have done thousands of times before, you reach for the handle of the faucet and turn on the water. Notice anything? Probably not. The water flows; you turn it off and go on your way. Because you use the faucet everyday, what you don’t notice is that gradually the internal parts of the faucet gain a buildup of minerals from the water, and the parts wear. This causes the internal parts to resist movement and thus, the handle is increasingly difficult to move. Think of it as arthritis in the faucet joints.

The good news is that you can save a lot of money by repairing the faucet yourself. Now, don’t let plumbing scare you. With a few common tools and some guidance, even the novice can accomplish the task and become a hero to your spouse or friend. Following, I have listed a few simple steps to help you repair a single lever faucet. I am only detailing the repair of a single lever faucet in this article because the steps for repairing this faucet are unique and I don’t have the space here to explain a multi lever faucet.

Please read the entire article before beginning the repair process. Once you begin the actual repair, you can then refer back to the individual steps to refresh your memory.

Single lever faucet repairing steps:

1) First of all, determine the brand and type of faucet you are repairing; if you can actually locate a brand imprint on the faucet that helps immensely. There are over 100 different brands and makes of faucets, and most of them take different parts. If you can’t find a name on the faucet, a great help is a digital camera. Take a picture of the faucet and show the picture to the plumbing supply store clerk. Odds are, when an experienced clerk sees the picture, he or she will know immediately what brand it is.

2) Once you know the faucet brand, or have a photo, you can purchase the necessary repair parts. You can either go to the big box type stores or a local hardware; they each have their own particular strong points. Describe the symptoms of the sick faucet to the clerk. Is the handle difficult to move? Does the faucet leak water around the base of the spout? (Kitchen faucets are notorious for this.) The clerk should know which parts to give you and may save you from having to make multiple trips to the store because you have the wrong parts. If you are repairing a Moen brand faucet, it is a good idea to purchase a "puller" tool to remove the old cartridge. There are differing types of cartridge removal tools; an inexpensive plastic design is available or more expensive heavy duty metal ones. For the homeowner, the cheaper plastic one should work just fine. You can accomplish the faucet repair without one, but using the removal tool makes life a LOT easier. (When making repairs, the lowest priority for me is saving a few cents on parts. I would much rather frequent a store or supplier that stocks a wide variety of quality parts and employs knowledgeable and helpful staff.)

3) TURN OFF THE WATER TO THE FAUCET. Did I emphasis this enough? Before you disassemble the faucet, turn off the water supply. Usually, there are small chrome or brown valves inside the sink cabinet toward the back. If you are like every other American I have ever worked for, the sink cabinet will be packed full and those valves will be buried under every kind of cleaning and shampoo bottle imaginable. Toss in a hair dryer, makeup, spare soap and toothpaste and…well, you get the idea. Dig through the debris and locate the valves. If the valves won’t turn easily, you may have to find the main water shut-off valve for the house and turn off the water there. If you need help in finding the main water valve, check out the article on how to do this at my website.

4) Once the water is off, close the drain stopper on the sink. This little trick was taught me by another plumber over 30 years ago. The reason for this? Most likely, while disassembling the faucet, you are going to drop a small screw or gasket and the closed stopper prevents the small part from disappearing down the drain. Brilliant. Before disassembling the faucet, if you want or need a detailed, illustrated breakdown of your particular faucet and its parts, these illustrations can usually be found on the manufacturer’s websites.

5) Remove the handle. There is often a removable plastic lid which covers the handle screw. Pry off the lid and remove the screw. Some handles are attached by a set screw on the side of the handle instead of the top. Look the handle over, with a little investigating, it should be obvious.

6) Once the handle is removed you will see some type of device which secures the replaceable parts in place. Sometimes this is a horseshoe shaped metal clip that slides out. Other times it is a type of round threaded cap that unscrews. Remove the retaining clip or cap.

(Some brands of faucets have a surrounding sheath that encircles the horseshoe clip. This tube needs to be removed first, and then the horseshoe shaped ring can be slid out. To remove the sheath either it is designed to unscrew or to be pulled off by grasping with pliers and pulling toward you. After the sheath is removed grasp the tab of the horseshoe clip with pliers and carefully slid it out by pulling it to the side. These parts should remove easily.)

7) Now, you should see a plastic or brass cartridge that can be removed by pulling it out. If this is a Moen faucet, this is when you use the removal tool. Follow the directions found on the tool packaging. Be careful not to damage the faucet body itself during this process. Some faucet brands contain a plastic or brass ball here instead of a cartridge. Lift or pull this part out. Under the round ball you should see two small rubber seats and springs. Remove them. (In this step, all parts removed should match the new parts which you picked up at the store.)

Once the old parts or cartridge are removed, it is a good idea to use a flashlight and peer inside the faucet where the old part used to live. See any pieces of debris or broken pieces of the old cartridge in there? If so, use needle nose pliers to remove it.

9) You can now install the new parts and work your way backwards through the steps as you reassemble the faucet, remembering to replace all retaining clips and rings. If you have any parts left over, take the faucet back apart and figure out where they go before turning the water on. Take your time and you should be just fine

10) This is the most important step. After the faucet is reassembled, the water is back on and you have tested it to make sure it works well, show off your work to your spouse or friends. Watch their reactions as they marvel at how well the faucet works. Now, YOU are the hero, not the plumber you would have had to pay to make the repair.

How to Change a Shower Faucet – Mistakes Can Be Very Expensive
By Yoga Priyakara

The air of despair surrounding you can be attributed to the shocking headlines in newspapers around the world. ‘Spain cooks Russia’s Guus’ cried out one, in a scathing attack on Russia’s football coach after his team was ousted rather unceremoniously from Euro 2008.

But in your case, it’s something more banal that’s responsible for the palpable sense of deflation. Is the very ponderous task of how to change a shower faucet the cause for your consternation? If it is, here are tips that would obliterate your trepidation completely.

Before You Get Down To Some Serious Business

Every task, no matter how straightforward, calls for some amount of preliminary spade work. This one’s no different, so make sure you don’t gloss over these initial steps:

Make a detailed estimate of the work to be accomplished. If you’re required to remove the fixture from behind the wall, you better steel yourself for a lot of sweat and toil.

Consider yourself providential if there’s an access panel located on the wall behind the fixture. If not, you can only make some headway by cutting the wallboard.

If the faucet is attached to an antiquated piping system, treat it like an inefficient relic of the past only to be replaced by copper pipes.

Does the rationale behind the accurate measurement of the fixture require any elucidation?

Remember the saying, ‘a bad workman always blames his tools?’ So make sure you have 2 pipe wrenches, box wrenches, copper pipe cutter, adjustable wrench, vice grips in addition to safety goggles, propane torch, flux and solder ready and raring to go.

Now, The Transformation

With your high level of groundwork, you can now deal with this seemingly Herculean task on a war footing. Here’s how:

The knobs and front retaining nut are the first to fall.

The water feed pipes are next in line. If, much to your delight, they’re made of copper, they’ll come off without affording much resistance. But your glee is sure to be short-lived if they happen to be of an older variety. What exacerbates your agony is the fact that they may also be severely corroded. Take them out cautiously, without twisting them.

There may also be need to replace the lead pipes with their copper counterparts. This is achieved with the help of a mechanism calls transition fitting, wherein the amalgamation takes places underneath the foundation.

The directions of the manufacturer of the new shower faucet must be considered earnestly.

Above all, make sure you complete the replacement procedure without a hitch, or else this refreshing new change could actually prove counterproductive.

Do you know just how you can fix that leaky shower faucet – easy and fast ? Check out http://www.SpicyKitchens.com

Change, they say is the only thing that remains constant, whether in your life or in your house. Sometimes this change becomes inevitable, sometimes it may be to palliate the dreariness in a certain place.

Either way, replacing shower tub faucet is not something we can maintain a detached character to.

Considering the ubiquity of shower tub faucets, it’s hard to remain ignorant about their replacement process. I’m sure you may have replaced that tired-looking fixture in your bathroom too. But did you treat it just like any other generic fixture in your inanimate space, or were you all gung-ho about installing something that could freeze traffic.

If you too are keen to push the envelope just a little further, make sure you settle down on your favorite sofa, grab that piping hot cuppa of coffee, and read what follows. Trust me; the quotidian drabness in your bathroom is sure to be drowned forever.

Your Task Cut Out

The massive assortment of faucets flooding Home Improvement Stores does not make your task of finding the best any easier. It’s just not the shape and size that we are referring to here; there?s a staggering array of styles and finishes too.

Since it’s rather hard to get your head around this hugely overwhelming task, here’s what you must bear in mind before embarking on a shower tub faucet replacement exercise:

Size does matter: For once, it does. When you set off on a shopping spree, take the old faucet along with you. Make sure you are absolutely clear about the measurements when your choices are setting mouse clicks aflutter online.

Dripping style from every pore: Faucets with fine lines and beautiful curves enhance the appeal of modern bathrooms, while the more decorative varieties make traditional spaces come alive.

Fight to the finish: Stainless steel, brushed nickel, chrome or oil rubbed bronze, they burnish the aura of the space like never before.

Safety first: In this mad rush to create a sight to behold, make sure you do not sequester very important safety considerations to a corner. In-built scald protection is not something you can treat flippantly.

So are you ready to hit the stores with a vengeance? Good luck!

Learn exactly how to generate 100′s or even 1000′s of positively brilliant Bathroom Remodeling Ideas … FAST ! By Kelly P Kramer

Faucets have internal parts that eventually wear out. The first to go are the washers and o-rings, then the seats, and then possibly the stem.

As these parts wear you will start to get leaking from your faucet. The leaks could come from the spout and drip into the sink, or you could get leaking from the handle(s) and have water running on to your counter or under the counter. Just before we get into repairing your faucet let’s consider a couple of things.

For you water conservationalists its out there did you know that 1 drop of water per second equals about 2,500 gallons of water per year? And most people that I have repaired faucets for wait until there faucet is leaking about 6-10 drips per second. That is about 12,500 to 25,000 gallons of water per year. That’s $80 to $140 per year. Plus most of your leaks will start on the hot side way before the cold, since the hot water will deteriorate the rubber in the valves much quicker. So with the way energy costs are today you can add 30% to 60% to those costs.

If your bathroom faucet is 10 years old or older you may wish to change the faucet out with a new one. I definitely recommend doing this. The reason I believe you should do this is that the labor for repairing the faucet and the labor for replacing the faucet are fairly close to the same. And the parts for repairing the faucet will be around $35.00. A new faucet will cost you around $75.00. So for only an extra $40.00 you will have a nice new faucet to brighten up your bathroom.

With your kitchen faucet the price difference can be much more significant. In either case you will need to make a decision that fits your situation the best.

Now with the bath tub or shower faucets, since the valve is behind the wall, then I recommend repairing the leak. The best time to replace a bath tub or shower faucet is during renovations. It is possible for you to replace sooner if you have enough access to the faucet from the back. So you could replace with a similar faucet or there is a flange made by delta that will cover holes left from a two or three handle faucet when you install a single lever faucet. Faucet styles

This is an absolutely huge area. There is literally thousands of different faucets and models of faucets over the last 30 years.

A short list of the more common styles are:

Two handle bathroom, kitchen, bathtub or shower faucets with seats and washers
Two handle washerless bathroom, kitchen, bath tub or shower faucets
Three handle bath/shower faucets with seats and washers
(these will have a hot and cold tap as well as a control for the bath/shower)
Single lever bath/shower faucets with cartridge
Single lever kitchen faucets with pull-out head and cartridge
Single lever kitchen and bathroom faucets with rubber seats and ball control

The reason I say short list is because each of the above can have many different variations. There are dozens of different seats, washers, and cartridges. Because there is so many different styles and variations the time to make the repair can become longer because quite often you will need to go to a specialty shop to match the parts with the parts you removed. So you can understand that if you are paying a plumber $75.00 per hour (that is the going rate here) the replacement of the faucet may be cheaper than the repair of the faucet.

Now on to the faucet repair job

Each type of faucet will have a similar repair procedure. I suggest putting the parts in order on the counter beside you as you pull them out so that you know exactly how to put them back again.

1. Turn off the water.
2. Pry off the handle screw cover.
3. Take the screw out of the handle
4. Remove handle (you may need handle pullers to do this)
5. Remove escusion if there is one (usually on two handle bath tubs and showers)
6. Loosen off the holding nut (in single lever bathtub showers there is a holding ring)
7. Remove the stem (cartridge in single lever bath/showers)
8. Check the brass seats for cuts (use your baby fingernail or flashlight)
(remove rubber seats if you have a washerless faucets)
9. Replace brass seats if necessary (the seats might be chrome as well)
10. Replace the washer (replace the cartridge in single levers)
11. If need be replace the stem.
12. Put back together
13. Check for leaks.

Congratulations! You just saved yourself $100-$200 repairing your own faucet
